The Brooklyn Neighborhood is a touchy subject for some native charlatans. According to our interviewee, memebers of the Brooklyn neighborhood had mixed feelings on why the city council wanted to clear it out. Some thought that the city council were being racist to the African American community and some thought that they were prejudice to the low socioeconomic status people. After doing our research we were also confused on the real reason they decided to tear the neighborhood down. We learned that the Brooklyn community had several businesses that were popular among the African American culture. There were some areas within the Brooklyn neighborhood that was considered the slums but there were also some really nice parts of the neighborhood where most of the business owners lived. Once the neighborhood was tore down completely, those who were apart of the neighborhood had to start all over wherever they could fit into. This left that community angry, bitter, and sad.
In the place of the Brooklyn neighborhood today there are new housing developments, brand new businesses, and new churches. We both believe that the city council forced diversity amongst the Brooklyn neighborhood. We believe this because it was initially an all black successful growing community, that the city council felt it needed a change to diversify the business world of charlotte. The cost of land was risen and it was no longer affordable to the middle class African Americans. Everything that they work so hard to build was taken from underneath their feet. Now, the only thing that these people have left of their community is memories which is heart breaking to those still living.
Researching about the Brooklyn Neighborhood was a learning experience for us. We never knew that Charlotte had a city within a city. The Brooklyn community has taught us to cherish what you have today for you may no longer have it tomorrow. Some of the information was surprising and some was expected. Once again this was quite a learning experience for the both of us.
